Two canvas shoes can have similar soles but differ substantially in the opening you must pass your foot through.

Choose the route your foot takes through the upper

Compare a lace-up low sneaker with a slip-on before choosing a size. Laces provide a particular opening and adjustment route; a slip-on relies on its fixed opening and any stated elastic sections. Look at the exact construction and ask for relevant fit information if entry is the problem with your current shoes. A sole length or familiar size label does not explain the opening above it. Use a comfortable reference with the socks you intend to wear. Decide which format you can put on and secure as intended without making an undocumented assumption about stretch. Record the reference sock thickness qualitatively so a later fitting comparison uses the same setup.

Read the toe and width information for this style

Follow the selected manufacturer's foot-measurement method and chart, keeping country sizes clearly identified. Check whether the style offers a width option and what its description actually states. A rounded toe in a photograph cannot prove the interior room available to your foot. Compare the whole reference fit, including where your heel sits when the upper is secured. Do not increase the length solely to solve an unknown width problem without considering the change elsewhere. If a key fit detail is absent, seek clarification before treating another market's size conversion as a solution.

Inspect the fastening and surrounding construction

For a laced sneaker, check the eyelet route, tongue arrangement and included laces. For a slip-on, inspect the elastic placement and rear opening. These details can differ between shoes that look almost identical from the side. If you plan to wear the sneaker with a particular trouser hem, compare the upper height and the way that hem meets it. Do not infer a protective, sporting or weather rating from a casual canvas style. The exact manufacturer's intended use should guide that separate question, rather than the familiar appearance of a rubber-edged sole.

Do not assume canvas means machine washable

Read the actual care directions for the complete shoe, including upper, lining, sole and decorative trim. A fabric name does not establish how its adhesives or other components should be cleaned. Decide where the sneakers will dry and be stored according to those instructions. Reject a slip-on when the opening remains unsuitable even though the foot-length chart appears promising. Choose a lace-up or slip-on because its documented fit and access route agree with your needs. Colour and styling become useful final choices once the opening, width information and handling process have a practical answer.
